Mdina Book by Nicholas de Piro / Miranda Books

€ 85.00

Description

This is a brand new copy of the coffee-table hard cover (including slip case) picture book on Mdina. Normally sells for €135 - €150.

This book focuses on Malta’s old capital city, the walled town Mdina, also known as ‘Notabile’ or ‘Citta` Vecchia’. It was originally built by the Arabs in 870 AD and the 200 metre high plateau is incomparable. Rebuilt after the great earthquake of 1632, it is the perfect example of a medieval city and, in some ways, better preserved than Valletta, and more Maltese. The Knights of St John were never made to feel welcome here by the Maltese nobility, so they soon left Mdina for Birgu (Vittoriosa).

This may be the reason why the author feels that this city is “the symbol of true Maltese aspiration” and “distinctly the Maltese city of old”. This volume takes us on a tour through the winding narrow streets of this quaint, pretentious and always charming minuscule place.

It recreates the unique atmosphere of Mdina through stunning photography and a narrative which is not only made up of historical facts, but also interesting anecdotes about the residents of Mdina, that puts forward the true flavour of this delightful place.
