Originally painted on oak wood by the Dutch master Pieter Aertsen around 1550, the original is held in the Alte Pinakotech in Munich.
This item is a reproduction of the original, hand painted in oil on canvas in the same dimensions as the original work.
The painting is beautifully framed and measures 585mm (h) x 1220mm (w).
The painting represents a market scene typical of towns throughout Europe at the time when Birgu was occupied by the Knights of Malta, before the construction of Valletta. A local market not dissimilar to the one illustrated by Aertsen still takes place in Birgu every week.
